Kick Start an Active Lifestyle for the New Year

Another year is upon us, and it is time to reassess all that we have accomplished, , and look forward to what is ahead. For most of us we look at our physical bodies and want to start making changes. It is important to be mindful and gentle with ourselves when trying to get into forming healthy habits and new routines, especially if there were times when we failed to meet our goals in the past.

It is easier to start a workout regime when you are doing something you enjoy. Slowly combining things that get you to move each day will keep you more motivated.

Here are a few pointers to get you inspired and started:

1) Set aside time to move

For most of us setting aside a time that is convenient helps us adjust to this new habit. Removing as many obstacles to success as possible smooths the way.

2) Choosing an activity that inspires us to move

There is such a variety of activities that can encourage our mind to cooperate with our bodies and exercise. Walking, running, swimming, yoga, dance, weight training, sports; something for everybody. No need to make the mere thought of the activity destroy our resolve when there is something for the most active to the most sedentary of us. Find your fit!

3) Remember to be mindful with food

Sometimes when we eat we are in such a rush that we fail to take time to notice what we are putting into our bodies. Mindful eating also means no using food during times of stress, or boredom, and no emotional eating. Take time to prepare the food, and take the time to be fully present while eating. Watch your portion control and be aware of cravings to ensure you have no vitamin or mineral deficiency. Try to break the sugar and flour addictions. These are empty calories.

4) Make sure your environment makes you feel good

To accomplish your goals a locale needs to feel inspiring; check your surroundings, are they conducive to helping you meet your goals?

As James Ckear writes in his article, "Environment Design,"

"Think about your environment in relation to the number of steps it takes to perform a habit. To make good habits easier, reduce the number of steps to do them. To make bad habits harder, increase the number of steps between you and the habit."

5) Unplugging from the hustle and bustle if technology for a bit

We’ve all happily embraced the endless possibilities that modern technology offers to stay connected and entertained 24/7. it’s important to set boundaries for ourselves about how to use today’s gadgets and media to our benefit, not become a slave of it. Taking a digital detox is related to many healthy habits on this list, like getting enough sleep, preventing information overload, and deepening your connections with others.

Technology offers us so many ideas and possibilities but staying connected round the clock also takes a toll on our bodies and minds. It is very important to set up fine lines between us and being constantly wired or logged on and being fully present in our environment. Being a slave to our gadgets has become a very hard thing to just set aside and ignore, causing all kinds of sleeping issues and being overloaded with information. Once we remember to fully present we can connect better with others and enrich those relationships.

Setting aside guidelines to free yourself: making technology free time, maybe setting time before bed, so you can fall asleep quicker and deeper, or choosing a day of the week to have a few hours with nature and just be still without being plugged in will help you benefit in a very big way.
